Tribal pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is taupe in the ground.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Pomegranate and ruby over mink, large flowers in the border
Mink Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Mihman Series — a mink ground with flowers opening across it in pale blue, pomegranate pink, ruby red and brick, bounded by a border of large flower heads. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan, a wool surface above cotton, 269 × 364 cm (8'10" × 11'11"). There is one. Oushak drawing is usually firm; here it has been let out.
The stems curve as though wind had moved them, and the motifs are spread widely enough that the eye can walk between them without getting caught. Color arrives in small quantities — a blue, a blossom pink, a red — against a ground that stays neutral all the way to the border, and the effect at ten paces is of a pale rug with something happening in it rather than a patterned one. The construction follows the rest of the series: a wool surface, a cotton base carrying a modest amount of recycled synthetic thread, and roughly 2,000 knots per 10 cm².
What that count buys is the thinness of the flower stems, which at a coarser knot would simply become lines. Months of hand work go into a piece at this scale. A mink ground is more forgiving than a cream one and less forgiving than a red one, so keep it clear of a doorway and let a trained washer handle it. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan, Mihman series. Wool pile over a cotton foundation with a small proportion of recycled synthetic yarn. Roughly 2,000 knots per 10 cm². Curving Oushak flowers in pale blue, pomegranate pink, ruby and brick over mink. A border of large flower heads closes the field. 269 × 364 cm (8'10" × 11'11") — a wide room, or a long one with the furniture standing on it. Washing by a professional. A single rug; the next one will not be this one. This is the Oushak for people who want the pattern without the volume.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
