Cocoon silk with the wool, Oushak drawing on beige

On the surface: Natural, Wool, Silk. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Classic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is beige, cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Cocoon silk with the wool, Oushak drawing on beige
Gold-yellow, green, brown and a touch of burgundy on beige — a warm, low-contrast palette rather than a bright one, worked into Anatolian and Oushak drawing across 224 × 322 cm (7'4" × 10'7").
A Sultan-series piece, knotted by hand in Türkiye, in real wool with cocoon silk. One of one. Nothing in the palette fights anything else in it, which is what allows the rug to go into a room that is already furnished.
The Oushak forms are drawn large, at a scale that survives a table set down in the middle of the field, and the burgundy appears in such small quantities that it registers as depth rather than as a color. Beige is the ground that changes most between morning and evening: north light pulls it gray and lamplight pulls it gold, and the greens follow it in both directions. Cocoon silk is reeled off the intact cocoon instead of being spun from broken waste fiber, and that is why the silk here holds light so cleanly against the matt wool around it.
The pile is wool for wear and silk for drawing, at a density the Sultan series set as its standard, and that standard is a large part of why the series is no longer made. At this size it takes a dining table and the chairs that stand back from it, a full seating group, or the whole floor of a bedroom.
Against a single-color modern sofa in black it goes to contrast; beside classical furniture it goes quiet. Only a professional should wash it. Wool and cocoon silk, worked by hand on a Turkish loom. Beige ground; gold-yellow, green and brown drawing with small burgundy accents. Anatolian and Oushak motifs, drawn large enough to survive furniture. Beige shifts gray in north light and gold under lamps. 224 × 322 cm (7'4" × 10'7") — dining room, salon or a full bedroom floor. Reads as contrast beside plain black furniture and as calm beside classical. Professional washing only. From a series no longer in production. Low-contrast rugs are the ones people keep through three houses, because they never belonged to a scheme in the first place.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
