Red Anatolian-Pattern Round Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Tempus Series

Round rugs are rare in Anatolian weaving, and this is one: a round loom-woven wool rug in red, with white and blue detail gathered into a symmetrical floral medallion at the center and a frame of the same drawing around the rim. It comes off looms in the Aegean, made for Halıcızade, and carries the house tree-of-life mark. Red is the traditional ground of Anatolian village weaving and it carries the pattern differently from a neutral — the white reads as bright rather than pale, and the blue, which would look cold on cream, sits warm against it.

01Up close to the pattern

The medallion is drawn symmetrically, four ways from the middle, so a round rug has no wrong side to enter from. Whichever chair you come to it from, the pattern arrives the same way up. Tempus is loom-woven, which puts a machine behind the structure and a person at the finish: the pile is set on the loom at a density that comes close to knotting, and the ends are closed by hand afterwards.

02The Wool on the surface

The yarn is wool through the surface, over a cotton warp. The weave is of medium thickness and packed tightly, which gives dust less room to settle and makes it straightforward to vacuum. We should say plainly that this is not a hand-knotted rug and it is not sold as one — what it offers is the surface of one at a fraction of the hours. Round format, so the drawing reads the same from any approach. Medium thickness, densely packed; dust has little to settle into.
