Beige Authentic-Pattern Round Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Urkum Series

Wool is the whole of it — 100% wool, thick and firm, worked into a round loom-woven rug 180 cm across (5'11") in a soft beige, with red, blue and mustard figures set over the ground and multicolored threads at the fringe. It is woven in India for the Urkum series. Beige is the quietest ground in the series and it changes the character of the same drawing entirely: what reads as bold on red or navy here reads as scattered and cheerful, small marks on an open surface.

01Which tone on the ground

In daylight the ground warms toward sand and the mustard almost disappears into it; in the evening the red and blue separate out and the pattern comes back. The fringe carries several colors at once, which is the series signature. The figures are drawn from Gabbeh, the nomad weaving of the Anatolian and Middle Eastern uplands, where motifs traveled by memory from one generation to the next.

02Knot by knot, by hand

Halıcızade has the Urkum rugs made on looms where a machine takes the structure and hands take the finish, which is what produces a surface this thick without the years a knotted rug would need.

03What the yarn is

We say the same thing about every Urkum piece: a deep wool pile is not for a household where someone reacts to it. Professional cleaning keeps the colors where they are.
