The Aegean coast of Türkiye keeps a craft that has nearly stopped: Cream Flowered Handwoven Wool Rug, Emirgan Series came off a loom there, worked in wool and viscose at a high knot count, with flowers spread over a cream ground in purple and green and small notes of pink and blue. One piece, and the technique behind it is thinning out. Its drawing borrows from Oushak and from the wider Anatolian repertoire, but the flowers have been enlarged and the ground opened up so the rug reads the way modern furniture wants it to.

01Which tone on the ground

Cream is the ground, purple and green do the structure, and pink and blue arrive in single blossoms — the two colors that stop the palette from collapsing into a monochrome. Laid over dark boards, the contrast is what you notice first.

02The Wool on the surface
