Burgundy Oushak Handwoven Wool Rug, Harem Series

Start with the yarn: greasy-fleece wool from Erzurum, the heaviest and glossiest clip in Türkiye. It is worked here into a handwoven wool rug in burgundy from the Harem series, with a wide cream border of curling branches and small blossoms taken from fifteenth-century Oushak drawing, in 168 × 263 cm (5'6" × 8'8") and 237 × 326 cm (7'9" × 10'8"). Burgundy carries pattern differently from red.

01Reading the motif

It absorbs light instead of throwing it back, so the cream border does the work of holding the eye and the field stays quiet underneath. The border motifs are the recognizable Oushak vocabulary — leaf, vine, blossom, repeated at a scale that reads from across a room — but the drawing has been opened out and simplified, which is what keeps the piece from looking like a reproduction.

02Which tone on the ground

Against oak and walnut it sits warm; beside a pale gray sofa it becomes the only color in the room. Çınar Halı wove it for Halıcızade in Türkiye, on the Anatolian double knot: two loops around each pair of warps, slower than the single knot and the reason the pile keeps its angle for decades. The design is Çınar's own and has been recognized with international awards.

03The Wool on the surface

Erzurum's greasy fleece holds enough natural oil to keep a luster that a drier wool loses within a few years. Burgundy is a committing color, though — it will set the palette of a room rather than fit into one already settled.

04Knot by knot, by hand

Deep cleaning belongs to a rug washer. Handwoven in Türkiye by Çınar Halı, made for Halıcızade. Erzurum greasy-fleece wool, prized for luster and for wear.
