Classic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is burgundy.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Genuine Bursa silk worked into a deep burgundy field
A burgundy Oushak, knotted by hand for the Harem series in wool with silk through it: one deep burgundy field, a wide beige-ground border of Oushak flowers running around it, 198 × 280 cm (6'6" × 9'2"), made in Türkiye.
There is one. Burgundy at this saturation behaves like velvet as the light changes: it lifts by day and thickens under lamps, and silk is what makes the movement visible. The border is the counterweight.
Beige underneath, with florals in earth, russet and pale green, it stops the burgundy from becoming a block, and the relation between the plain center and the worked edge is the whole architecture of the piece.
Classic Oushak drawing supplies the shapes; the scale and the spacing are contemporary. Erzurum fleece supplies the wool, spun with the grease left in, which is the old way and the reason the surface has any gloss at all.
Doubling each knot is what the region's weavers have always done, and it is why the body is tight and the edges keep their line. There is genuine Bursa silk in the pile too, and it is what gives the burgundy its lift. The weaving house is Çınar Halı, which has represented Turkish hand-knotting abroad for years.
Washing goes to a professional and nowhere else. Çınar Halı in Türkiye knotted it by hand for Harem. Erzurum fleece spun with the grease left in, alongside genuine Bursa silk. Each knot doubled, as the region's weavers have always done. A plain deep burgundy field inside a beige-ground Oushak floral border. Earth, russet and pale green in the border drawing. 198 × 280 cm (6'6" × 9'2") — a large sitting room, or a dining table with chairs pushed back. The washing is professional work. One rug, and no repeat of it. A dark field hides what a pale one shows, which is the practical reason burgundy has been the color of hard-used rooms for as long as rugs have been woven.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
