Beige Frame-Pattern Handwoven Wool and Silk Rug, Sultan Series

The Sultan series is no longer being made, and this is one of the pieces that remain from it: a handwoven wool and silk rug, 204 × 318 cm (6'8" × 10'5"), woven in Türkiye, with a frame drawing taken from Oushak motifs in beige, gold-yellow and a green that only shows when the light is on it. One piece, in that combination. The frame is the structure of the whole thing.

01The origin of the pattern

A wide bordered band runs the perimeter and repeats inward, so the eye is walked from the edge toward the field in stages rather than dropped into the middle. Inside those bands the Oushak forms have been redrawn at a smaller scale — hooks, rosettes, a running vine — and it is here that the silk appears.

02The mark of slow weaving

The wool ground is matt, the silk is not, and the pattern is legible mainly because of that difference: from a low chair the motifs come forward, from standing height they settle back into the beige. Tied by hand in Türkiye, at a density that has become uncommon — the reason the series was retired rather than reissued is that weavers working at this count are increasingly hard to find.

03How it feels underfoot

Wool carries the ground and the wear; silk is used only in the motifs, where it earns its place. It sits well under classic joinery, and under the thin metal legs of newer furniture it stops the room reading as a showroom.

04From the hand of the weaver

Only a professional wash house should touch it, and not often. Handwoven in Türkiye, in wool with silk worked into the motifs. 204 × 318 cm (6'8" × 10'5") — a room-sized piece for a large living or dining space. Oushak-derived frame drawing, band inside band, in beige, gold-yellow and green. Matt wool ground against a silk sheen in the pattern; the contrast is what makes it read. High knot density, which is what the series was built around. The Sultan series has been discontinued; the remaining pieces are what exist. Professional washing, infrequently. Fewer and fewer rugs at this count come off Turkish looms each year, which is a fact about the trade rather than a selling point, and it is the plainest thing that can be said about this one.
