Beige Frame-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Rug, Sultan Series

Everything here happens inside a frame. A Sultan-series rug of 177 × 234 cm (5'10" × 7'8"), hand-knotted in Türkiye in beige with gold and green, its field bordered on all four sides and its pattern held deliberately within.

01What Wool does

Wool makes the ground and silk appears only in the motifs. A framed composition is a quieter thing than an all-over one. The border sets a boundary, the drawing respects it, and the room around the rug stays legible instead of being swallowed.

02Color, by the light

Inside that boundary the Oushak-derived motifs are worked in gold against beige, with green used sparingly along the frame itself. The ground stays matt right across, and what catches the light is the silk in the pattern and nothing besides. Knotted by hand in Türkiye from wool and silk, at the density the series is built around.

03What the yarn is

Confining silk to the motifs is a decision about cost as much as about looks — it puts the expensive fiber where it can be seen and leaves wool where the wear happens, which is why a rug assembled this way outlasts one knotted entirely in silk.

04The mark of slow weaving

Fewer pieces come off Turkish looms at this density every year. Wash it professionally. Hand-knotted in Türkiye, wool ground with silk in the motifs. The field is enclosed by a border on all four sides and the pattern stays inside it. Beige and gold, with green worked along the frame. Matt wool surface, the shine confined to the silk drawing.
