Beige Floral Handwoven Silk-Blend Wool Rug, Sultan Series

The Sultan series is no longer being woven, and what remains of it is what there is: a beige floral handwoven rug in wool with silk, from the Sultan Series, at 182 × 245 cm (6'0" × 8'0"), made in Türkiye with a wool ground and silk in the flowers, drawn after Anatolian Oushak motifs in beige, gold and green. The trick of the design is the difference between two yarns. Wool takes the ground and stays matt; silk takes the flower heads and the leaf turns, and throws light back.

01Up close to the pattern

From standing height the pattern is barely raised out of the beige. Sit down, or let an afternoon sun cross the floor, and the whole floral order comes forward at once. Gold-yellow runs through the drawing, greenish tones follow the stems, and the beige beneath is warm rather than sandy. Tied by hand in Türkiye, and tied densely, which is the reason a flower here looks like a flower instead of six knots standing in for one.

02The Wool on the surface

The surface is wool, the pattern silk, and both are worked in the same rows rather than added afterward. Because the series has been discontinued, what exists is what exists, and the house cannot order another.

03Where it is laid

Beside carved wooden furniture it settles into a room; under a metal-legged table it does the opposite and holds the floor down. Have it washed by people who wash rugs. Handwoven in Türkiye, wool ground with silk worked into the pattern. 182 × 245 cm (6'0" × 8'0") — a full living-room size. Beige field with gold-yellow and green in the floral drawing. Anatolian Oushak motifs, redrawn at a domestic scale. High knot density; the flowers are drawn, not approximated. Matt wool and reflective silk in one surface, so the pattern shifts with the light.
