Classic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is beige, cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
The frame holds the drawing in: cream, gold and a green cast
Matt against gloss: the ground of this rug is wool and stays flat to the eye, while every motif drawn on it is silk and moves with the light. A Sultan-series frame pattern, knotted in Türkiye at 198 × 286 cm (6'6" × 9'5"), in cream, gold-yellow and a greenish cast.
One piece, from a series that has ended. The composition is enclosed — a frame running the perimeter and the Oushak-derived drawing kept inside it — which is a quieter arrangement than an all-over field and a more forgiving one in a square room, because the border gives the walls a line to agree with. Within the frame the motifs are worked small and close, so the pattern rewards standing over it more than looking at it from the door.
The greenish tone in the cream is what saves the rug from going yellow under warm bulbs. Density holds the shape of a piece like this over decades; the wool underfoot takes the wear and the silk in the drawing takes the light, which is the division of labor the series was designed around.
All of the knotting happened in Türkiye, and the number of Turkish looms working this fine has fallen far enough that the Sultan series was closed rather than continued. A frame pattern is unforgiving of a badly chosen room size: leave the border visible on all four sides, or the design stops working.
Washing is a professional job. Knotted by hand in Türkiye, wool ground with silk motifs. An enclosed frame composition; the drawing stays inside the border. Cream and gold-yellow with a greenish cast that holds off yellowing under warm light. Fine, close motif work — a rug to stand over rather than glance at. 198 × 286 cm (6'6" × 9'5"). Combines with metal-legged furniture as readily as with carved wood. Keep the border clear of furniture on all four sides. Professional washing.
The series is out of production. Framed rugs make a room look deliberate, which is the reason they were drawn that way in the first place.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
