The story of this rug

Three and a half times as long as it is wide, which is the proportion of a corridor rather than a room: a handwoven wool runner in the Sivas Zara pattern, 85 × 301 cm (2'9" × 9'11"), from the Anadolu Şal series, worked in green, red and blue.

01A line from the archive

Zara, in central Anatolia, is one of the districts of Sivas. The motifs are set out in bands that run across the width, so walking the length of it means passing through one register after another instead of standing back to take in a whole composition.

02After the color

Green supplies the calm, red the heat, blue the depth, and none of them is asked to yield to the others. Against plain walls and wood the effect is of a corridor that has been given something to be about. These are made in weaving workshops across Anatolia, by women, over a production run measured in months rather than days.

03First contact

First-grade wool is what gives the surface its softness, its natural shine, and the durability that lets a piece take corridor traffic for years. The banding is not machine-straight and the two ends are not identical, because the rug was finished at tension on a loom rather than cut to a measurement.

Take it to a wash house; do not put it in a bath. Handwoven in Anatolian workshops by women weavers, over months. The yarn is first grade, soft, with the fleece's own luster. 85 × 301 cm (2'9" × 9'11") — a corridor, an entrance hall or a narrow room. Sivas Zara motifs, in bands across the width. At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
