Yellow Sivas Zara Handwoven Wool Runner, Anadolu Şal Series

The yellow is the first thing anyone sees, and it is an unusual ground for a piece this shape. Sivas Zara drawing, Anadolu Şal series: a wool runner handwoven in Anatolia at 85 × 301 cm (2'9" × 9'11"), with burgundy, navy, green and orange arranged in bands down the length of it. The bands are the drawing of Zara, in Sivas province, stacked one after another so that the pattern advances rather than sits. On a floor the effect is directional: you follow it.

01Color that shifts through the day

Burgundy and navy hold the two darkest registers, green and orange the two brightest, and the yellow underneath keeps the sequence warm instead of letting it turn into a set of stripes. It gives a narrow space the sense of belonging somewhere. Anatolian women weave these, one at a time, and the process runs to months.

02How it feels underfoot

The wool is first-grade and its shine is its own — nothing has been applied to it, and the color sits inside the fiber rather than on top of it, which is why it will still be this color after a decade of daylight.

03From the hand of the weaver

The traditional art it comes from is practiced by fewer weavers every year. Between washes a vacuum does the work. Handwoven by women in Anatolia, over months of work.
