Navy-Framed Sivas Zara Handwoven Wool Runner, Anadolu Şal Series

A deep navy frame runs the whole way round and does the containing: inside it, red, orange, green and yellow motifs are set out in horizontal bands, with cool grays balancing them at the edges.

01The mark of slow weaving

Anadolu Şal Series Sivas Zara Handwoven Wool Runner, 84 × 309 cm (2'9" × 10'2"), handwoven in Anatolia in first-grade wool. Without the frame this would be a bright rug with nowhere to stop. With it, the brights are held and the eye reads the bands in sequence instead of all at once.

02Reading the motif

The motifs themselves are finely drawn for a village pattern — small figures at close intervals, in the Zara idiom of Sivas province — and the gray keeps the whole thing from turning into a flag.

03From the hand of the weaver

Beside wood and gray furniture it links a modern room to an old craft without either one becoming a costume. Anatolian women weave these by hand, and months go into a piece of this length. First-grade wool is why the surface is soft, bright and hard-wearing at the same time.

04The origin of the pattern

Every motif on it has a few hundred years behind it, and in a long corridor what you are walking across is the labor and the patience of people who once lived by this. It answers to a vacuum; the rest goes out. Handwoven by Anatolian women weavers, over months.
