On the surface: Wool, Cotton. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Traditional pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a cream ground.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Cream that opens into beige and pastel, Oushak drawn in wool
The foundation of this one carries a trace of synthetic yarn, and the house says so rather than hiding it behind the word natural: a cream Oushak-pattern handwoven wool rug from the Mahal Series, 169 × 238 cm (5'7" × 7'10"), wool pile over a cotton base, tied with the Anatolian double knot.
Only one was made. Cream here is not one color. The yarn was dyed outside industrial process, so within what reads from the doorway as a single pale tone there are beige, light earth and soft pastel passages moving through each other, and the field gains depth from that alone.
Over it run the traditional Oushak forms — curling vegetal drawing, the classical repertoire of western Anatolia — spaced so the eye travels rather than stops. It agrees with wood tones and sits calmly against blue. Cotton takes the foundation; the pile above it is all wool; the small amount of synthetic in the base is there to hold the rug's shape over decades, and it is the reason a piece like this stays square.
Weaving is by the Anatolian double knot, kept alive in workshops in Pakistan where this series is made. The pile is not deep and the handle is on the firm side rather than the plush side, which makes it easy to keep clean and means it will feel harder underfoot than a thick rug.
Vacuum it; leave a full wash to people who do it for a living. Hand-knotted with the Anatolian double knot; wool pile carried on a cotton foundation. The base holds a trace of synthetic yarn, which is what keeps the rug in shape. 169 × 238 cm (5'7" × 7'10") suits a salon, a study, or an office of some standing. Cream shading into beige, light earth and pastel through non-industrial dyeing. Traditional Oushak vegetal drawing, curling rather than geometric. A shallow, firm pile: quick to clean, less soft than a deep one. Pale enough to make a dim room read brighter than it is. One piece only, in this cream and at these dimensions. It will sit under furniture for thirty years without asking for anything, which is the whole argument for a rug this restrained.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
