Drawn for Halıcızade, knotted in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nothing much happens in the middle. What is there is red, and not one red — brick at the surface, a deeper madder tone underneath, a lighter clay where the light lands — so the field has depth long before the eye finds a motif.

02Up close to the pattern

The figures wait at the border, geometric and small-scale, and only announce themselves at a meter. That order of discovery is the point of the name. A quiet center takes a low modern sofa and a glass table without argument; the worked frame is what lets the same rug hold its ground in a room of heavy old furniture. Weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan, most of them Turkmen, tie these by hand, and the knot is doubled — two loops where a single-knotted rug has one, which is where the density and the resistance to wear come from.

03The Wool on the surface

Everything the hand meets is wool. The foundation below is cotton almost throughout, carrying a trace of synthetic yarn for tensile strength, and we would rather name that than round the whole rug up to something simpler.
