01Which tone on the ground

The deep red ground is left almost bare through the middle and everything is concentrated into two loaded bands, arranged as modern stripes rather than as classical borders. Turquoise is the color that stops the red from becoming heavy; mustard and navy hold the figures apart at the small scale they are drawn.
