Cream Vintage-Pattern Loom-Woven Tencel® Rug, Zade Series

The flowers look as though they have been washed too many times. Zade Series, cream, vintage-pattern: a loom-woven rug that takes the fine floral drawing of Bünyan rugs and fades it back until it is nearly a memory.

01How it feels underfoot

Tencel® over cotton, from the Kütahya looms, at one size, 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"). Up close the drawing is all still there — stems, small blossoms, the shadow of a border — but light beige and soft earth tones gather around each flower and blur its edge, so from a chair the field reads as one pale surface with weather in it.

02Which tone on the ground

The palette runs cream, mink, silver, white and gray, which is the palette most rooms are already painted in. As the light turns, the surface moves from bright to matte and back, and that is the Tencel® rather than the dye. It was drawn for Halıcızade and woven on a mechanical loom in Kütahya, with the finishing done by hand.

03The Wool on the surface

Tencel® and cotton, no wool, and the fringe at each end finished by hand in the villages around the workshops. A tree of life is set into the drawing. This is the rug for the person who wants something beautiful on the floor but does not want it to look old, which is a narrower brief than it sounds. Loom-woven in Kütahya: machine structure, hand finishing. Tencel® over cotton, and no wool at all. Bünyan floral drawing faded back into cream, mink, silver, white and gray. A tree-of-life motif is worked into the pattern. Fringes closed by hand, village by village. 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"). Professional washing. Set beside light oak it disappears into the room, and against a dark floor it is the only pale thing in it.
