The story of this rug

Afghan rugs are burgundy — that is the first thing anybody knows about them. The stars and central medallions are the Afghan drawing exactly as it has always been, laid on a quiet gray ground with small orange marks glinting between them.

01The Wool on the surface

Gray Afghan-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Zade Series, woven in Kütahya from wool and Tencel® on cotton. From across a room the gray looks like one tone. It is not: fine figures run through it, and the orange only declares itself at the distance you would stand to talk to somebody.

02Where it is laid

Nothing on the surface insists, which is why the same rug works under a heavy classical sitting group and in a room holding almost nothing. The Afghan drawing has a strong accent; the gray takes the volume down without taking the accent away. It measures 290 cm on the long side and 200 across, which is 9'6" by 6'7".

03From ground to pile

Cotton makes the foundation; wool and Tencel® share the surface and behave differently under light, wool holding its color where Tencel® hands some back, so one square of the field is matt where you stand and lit from the far corner.

04Coming off the loom

The looms are in Kütahya, machine carrying the structure and the hand carrying everything else, and the fringes are knotted afterward one at a time by women nearby. Set into the border there is a tree of life, which is how Halıcızade signs a design it commissioned. Have it cleaned professionally. Loom-woven in Kütahya, machine structure finished by hand. Wool and Tencel® above a cotton foundation. Afghan stars and central medallions in gray instead of the customary burgundy. Small orange marks appear through the field at close range. 290 by 200 centimeters, a single size. A tree of life hidden in the border marks it as a house commission. Women in the surrounding villages knot every fringe by hand. Professional cleaning. It will sit as easily in a hotel lobby as in a study, and in both it does one job: holds the floor without asking anything of the room.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
