01Which tone on the ground

Walk toward it and the stars separate out of the cream one by one, held down by light beige and by shadows barely darker than the ground they lie on. The drawing never takes charge of the room, which is the whole reason the house redrew it this way: the star repertoire belongs to Afghan rugs and Afghan rugs are red, so the design team put it into cream, beige, mink and gray to see what it would do with the volume turned down.

02Which furniture, which room

Against classical furniture it behaves as a background; in a bare modern room it is the warm thing in the space. Tencel® and cotton, both plant-derived, worked together on a mechanical loom, with the finishing done by hand.

03Knot by knot, by hand

When the rug is finished the fringes are handed to women living nearby, who braid and knot them singly. The pile is short and sheds very little, so there is not much for dust to settle into and vacuuming is quick.

04Color that shifts through the day

Take it to a rug washer rather than a dry cleaner. Loom-woven in Kütahya, Türkiye — mechanical structure, hand finishing. Tencel® and cotton yarns, both spun from plant cellulose. 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"), which is enough to cover a living room floor. Afghan star motifs recolored for this house in cream, beige, mink and gray. The surface swings between bright and matt as the light moves across it. Fringes braided by hand, one rug at a time, by women in the villages near the loom. Short pile: little shedding, and a floor that vacuums in one pass. It is the rug for someone who wants an Afghan pattern in the house without the room turning red around it.
