Zima was drawn from Mevlana's line about how good it is to settle somewhere new each day and to flow on without muddying or freezing, and a sun that rises on a different horizon every morning is the plainest possible form for that idea.

01Which furniture, which room

It is a strong shape and it wants space around it. In a crowded room it will fight the furniture; in an open one it becomes the thing the furniture is arranged around. Cotton is braided into the foundation, and the surface goes over it in Tencel® and wool — the first playing with light, the second taking the weight and the traffic.

02Knot by knot, by hand

Weaving is done on looms between Kütahya and Uşak: the machine ties regular knots and the hand finishes the rug. A tree of life hides inside the form, which is how this house signs its own designs. The Zima series was drawn from a line of Mevlana's about settling in a new place each day and flowing on without muddying or freezing.

03The mark of slow weaving

The circle inside the arch is a sun setting on one horizon and ready to rise on another, which is that idea rendered as a single geometric form. Where are Zima rugs woven? They are loom-woven between Kütahya and Uşak in western Türkiye and finished by hand. A machine lays the structure down and ties the knots, and hands do the finish; the rug has the weight and feel of a knotted piece without being one. A decade from now the sun in the middle of it will still stop people in the doorway.
