Beige Abstract Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Zima Series

A pale disc opens near the middle of a beige ground and widens outward, the way light widens under a door left ajar: a loom-woven Tencel® rug in the Zima series, Tencel® above and cotton below, measuring 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), made on looms at Kütahya and Uşak in western Türkiye. Zima was drawn around a couplet of Rumi's — how good it is to alight somewhere new each day, how fine to flow on without clouding or freezing — and the design team read that as a set of doorways, each rug a moment of going through one.

Here the moment is quiet. There is no border and no medallion, only the field and the widening light, so the only thing the eye can do is follow it out. Beside oak, linen and unpainted plaster it withdraws politely; against anything dark in the room it does not. Tencel® is Lenzing's lyocell, drawn out of wood pulp, and it makes up the entire pile.

01From ground to pile

Underneath it, cotton. The two behave differently in light — lyocell throws it back, cotton holds it — and that difference is where the faint tonal drift across the surface comes from. Women run these looms; the machine lays the structure and the hands close the ends, which is why the surface passes for knotted at arm's length and stops passing at close range.

02Coming off the loom

We do not call it hand-knotted, because it is not. A weave number goes onto every piece. Tencel® pile, cotton foundation, wool-free throughout. Loom-woven by women weavers in Kütahya and Uşak. An open beige field with one widening pale disc, and no border at all. Tencel® is lyocell, a Lenzing fiber made out of wood pulp. Sized 200 × 300 cm — enough floor for a sofa and two chairs. The house tree-of-life figure is worked in, and each rug is numbered. Professional washing only; the surface does not want a domestic machine. Rooms that are already quiet get quieter with it, which is the whole intention and will not suit everyone.
