Red Floral Round Loom-Woven Rug, Zade Series

A round loom-woven rug in red, Tencel® and cotton, from the Zade series: a floral field with the Halıcızade tree of life worked in at the edge, 160 cm across (5'3") for a small room and 200 cm (6'7") for a large one.

01Reading the motif

The red moves between a flat red and the deeper red of a pomegranate flower as the light in the room changes. Laid down, the color does most of the work before the pattern gets a chance to. The flowers are drawn lively rather than formal, spread evenly so the circle has no top or bottom, and the tree of life at the rim is small — it is a mark of origin, not an ornament.

02What it sits well with

Red darkens or lifts through the day, which gives a room a different floor at breakfast than at ten in the evening. It goes into classical rooms without effort, and into contemporary ones on the strength of the shape alone.

03The Tencel on the surface

Pieces from this series have gone into hotel lobbies and into rustic libraries, which is a wider range than most round rugs get asked for. Tencel® and cotton are both plant-derived, and together they make a surface that is soft to walk on and holds up to traffic.

04Knot by knot, by hand

The weaving is done on mechanical looms in Kütahya; when it comes off, the rug travels to houses nearby and a woman finishes each fringe. The pile is low, so dust has little to settle into. Other diameters can be woven for a project. Woven on a mechanical loom at Kütahya, Türkiye, and finished by hand. Tencel® and cotton, both plant-derived; no wool. A lively floral field on red, with no fixed top or bottom. The Halıcızade tree of life worked in at the rim. Red that shifts between flat red and pomegranate as light changes. Round: 160 cm or 200 cm, with other diameters woven to order for projects. Every fringe is finished by hand in a house near the workshop. Professional washing. Red on a circle is the loudest thing a floor can do quietly, and this is about as far as that goes.
