On the surface: Wool, Natural, Silk. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Modern pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads gray.
This rug is made in Pakistan. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Brown planes over light gray, and the silk stays in the brown
Like several sheets of paper dropped one on top of another and left where they fell: Gray Geometric Hand-Knotted Rug in Wool and Silk, Ayan Series — dark brown planes crossing a light gray ground, their edges drawn in thin lines, over a cotton foundation, 168 × 240 cm (5'6" × 7'10"). One of one. The overlaps are what give it depth.
Where two planes cross, the tone changes, and a three-dimensional read comes out of a flat surface with no shading trick behind it. Thin outlines round the shapes add a drawn quality, as though the composition had been sketched before anyone wove it. Beside gray and anthracite upholstery and black metal it is straightforwardly modern; in a study lined with wooden shelves it becomes the plain thing that allows everything else to be busy. Pakistan, by hand, on a cotton foundation.
Wool is matt and holds the gray steady; silk goes into the brown planes only, which makes them lift out of the ground under a lamp and settle back into it in flat daylight. That is the entire reason for the blend, and it is visible rather than theoretical.
The knot is doubled, close and even, so the geometry stays true — a slack weave would let straight edges wander within a year. Professional cleaning only. Hand-knotted in Pakistan; wool and silk pile on a cotton foundation. Dark brown planes overlapping on a light gray ground, edges drawn in fine lines. Silk placed only in the brown planes, which is what lifts them under a lamp. Doubled knots, close and even — the reason straight edges stay straight. 168 × 240 cm (5'6" × 7'10") — a mid-size sitting room, a study, a corridor. Made once; the design is not repeated in this size. Professional cleaning only. Geometry on a floor dates faster than flowers do, and this one is drawn loosely enough to have already stopped being of a particular year.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
