A canvas hangs on a wall and you look at it. You walk around a sculpture. A rug is the one work of art a person walks on — and for that reason the weaver has to build it to last a lifetime.
Most of the pieces in the Artisan collection were woven once; a few, two or three times. Once a piece comes off the loom, that pattern cannot be reached again.
In a time when everything moves this fast, it is hard to put a number on a piece that took close to a year to make. These works carry a value on a different scale than their price, and they were gathered for the small number of people who know it.
Cream Pure Silk Handwoven Classic Rug
The medallion opening on a cream ground reads two different colors depending on where the light falls — from one side the silk pile is gold, from the other, mother-of-pearl.
Fiber
The yarns in this collection are natural fibers — grades that are spun in far smaller quantities than their common equivalents.
Dye
Some are root-dyed, some chemically dyed. What does not change: the dyes are good enough that the colors hold through many years on the floor.
Knot
We are talking about one person tying hundreds of thousands of knots over months. Read that sentence again, and you will see what kind of craft you are looking at.
Washing
Woven, taken off the loom, washed again and again — until the pile comes up clean enough that you feel the difference underfoot.
