Tree of Life signature rugs are the pieces Halıcızade designs, colors and weaves itself. Each carries a small tree of life mark identifying the house as the origin of the drawing rather than the seller of it, and the pattern appears in no other brand's catalog. Five series sit under the signature, from reworked Oushak classics to abstract minimalism.

Most rug sellers buy their cartoons from the same design books as everyone else, which is why the same medallion turns up in four shops on one street. This collection is the other case: the drawing was made in the workshop, put into color there, and set on the loom there. What follows is what the mark means, what separates the five series, and which fibers they are woven in.

What the tree of life mark means

It is a maker's mark, not a motif. Look closely at a rug in this group and you will find a small tree of life woven into it — the house signature, indicating that this particular rug was designed, colored and woven by Halıcızade rather than bought in and relabeled. It functions the way a hallmark functions on silver.

The tree of life is also, separately, one of the oldest motifs in Anatolian weaving, and it appears on rugs that have nothing to do with this collection. The two uses are easy to confuse. A rug in this group may carry the mark without carrying the motif, and a village rug woven a century ago may carry the motif without any connection to the mark. For the motif itself, see what the tree of life motif means.

The five signature series

Each series has its own drawing, and they were developed for different rooms.

SeriesDrawingPalette seen mostSuits
ZadeOushak, vintage, floral and medallion patterns redrawn with a contemporary color sense; the widest of the fiveNavy, terra, saffron, brick, multicolorLiving rooms and dining rooms where a classical pattern is wanted without the classical palette
ZimaAbstract and geometric compositions; the plainest, most contemporary lineBeige, cream, red, burgundyRooms with strong furniture, where the rug should hold the floor and not argue
GünyoluVintage, abstract and patchwork drawing, worked at large formatMixed and faded, in the vintage mannerLarge open-plan floors that need one rug rather than two
SekoyaMinimal, spare drawing; the series that includes round formatsQuiet and close-tonedBedrooms, studies and the round-rug positions — under a table, in a bay
Baş BaşaThe same design discipline applied to the prayer rug: plain and abstract fields at 80 × 130 cm (2'7" × 4'3")Navy, brown, red, green, terra, ivoryPrayer, and small directional positions such as a bedside

Round pieces from the Sekoya series sit alongside the rest of the round rugs.

What they are woven from

Wool and Tencel, in roughly equal measure. Wool is the older answer and the warmer one — springy underfoot, slow to show a footprint, and durable in the way a highland fleece is durable. Tencel is a lyocell fiber spun from wood pulp, sold in the Turkish trade as bamboo; it takes dye brightly, has a low sheen that shifts as you cross the room, and feels closer to silk than to wool under the hand.

Most of the signature rugs are loom-woven rather than hand-knotted, which is what makes a consistent 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10") drawing repeatable at a sane price. Compare the fibers directly at wool rugs and Tencel rugs, or look at the workshop end of the scale in pure silk rugs.

Why a house design behaves differently on a floor

The practical difference is scarcity, not virtue. A pattern drawn for one workshop is woven in limited runs, and some pattern-and-color combinations exist as a single piece — when that combination sells, it is not reordered. A pattern licensed from a design book is woven by whoever licenses it, in whatever colors they choose, for as long as it sells.

That cuts both ways. It means a signature rug is unlikely to reappear in a neighbor's hallway, and it also means that a piece worth having is worth deciding on. Interior designers working to a scheme tend to use this collection for the same reason: the drawing can be matched to a room instead of the room being matched to whatever is in stock.

Living with one

Vacuum at low suction, without the beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Blot spills with a clean damp cloth from the edge inward and never rub, because rubbing drives the liquid down into the base of the knot where it sets. Rotate the rug twice a year so light and traffic fall on different parts of it. Wool and Tencel both want professional washing for a deep clean rather than a home shampoo; our guide to cleaning a rug sets out what that involves.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Tree of Life signature rug?

It is a rug whose pattern was drawn, colored and woven by Halıcızade rather than bought from a pattern library, and which carries a small tree of life mark identifying the house as its designer. The mark is a maker's signature, not a decorative motif.

Which series belong to the Tree of Life collection?

Five: Zade, Zima, Günyolu, Sekoya and Baş Başa. Zade reworks Oushak and medallion drawing in contemporary color, Zima is abstract and geometric, Günyolu is vintage and patchwork at large sizes, Sekoya is minimal and includes round formats, and Baş Başa is the prayer-rug format.

Is the tree of life mark the same as the tree of life motif?

No. The motif is an ancient Anatolian design that appears on rugs from many regions and periods. The mark is a house signature used by one workshop to identify its own designs. A rug can carry either one without the other.

What fibers are the signature rugs woven in?

Mainly wool and Tencel lyocell. Wool gives warmth, spring and long wear; Tencel takes color brightly and has a soft, faintly lustrous surface closer to silk. Both are woven on looms in Türkiye, and each product page states the fiber for that piece.

Is the same design woven more than once?

Signature rugs are woven in limited runs, and some pattern-and-color combinations exist as a single piece. If a particular combination has sold, a similar design can usually be worked out, but the exact piece is not reordered.

Are these rugs sold anywhere else?

No. The patterns in this collection were drawn and colored in the Halıcızade workshop, so they do not appear in another brand's range. That is what the tree of life mark on the rug is there to establish.

How should a signature rug be cleaned?

Vacuum at low suction without a beater bar, and lift spills by blotting with a clean damp cloth from the edge inward rather than rubbing. For a deep clean, both wool and Tencel pieces should go to a professional rug washer instead of being shampooed at home.
