Cream throughout, with a fine border drawn around a quiet field, and hundreds of thousands of knots behind the detail.

01Where the Border comes from

Only a small number of pieces were made. At first sight the border looks almost blank. Silk changes that: move a step and the reflection shifts, and the motifs inside the frame separate themselves out one by one — the classical flower figures of Anatolia and Central Asia, drawn small enough that the pattern is a reward for standing close.

02Knot by knot, by hand

Pale tones bounce what light there is back into the room, so a small rug of this kind lightens a space rather than anchoring it. Silk weaving at this level is a slow craft and a shrinking one; the workshops that still do it are fewer each decade, and rugs of this composition are no longer being made in quantity.

03From ground to pile

A silk content this high means a fine, thin body and a surface that shows the direction of the pile from across a room. It also means this is not a floor for traffic. Keep it in a reception room or a bedroom, off the route through the house, and let a professional clean it.
