White Striped Handwoven Wool Rug, Örge Series

It is built the way a sweater is: thick loops worked by hand into fine ribs that run the length of the piece, all of it in white. Örge Series handwoven rug, made in India from mainly wool, with cotton and a little viscose alongside it, in four sizes; the smallest runs 80 × 150 cm, or 2'7" × 4'11", and the largest 200 × 300 cm, around 6'7" × 9'10". From across a room it reads as one flat color, and only up close does the stripe appear — a vertical rhythm made by the loops themselves rather than by any change of yarn.

That is the entire design. It works beside pale oak and at the plaster-and-linen end of a room, and it fails next to anything already carrying a pattern, because two textures competing is worse than two patterns competing. Weavers in India build it one loop at a time, which is slow and shows in the density of the surface: the stitches are thick enough that standing on it is nearer to standing on a folded blanket than on a rug.

01From ground to pile

Wool makes up most of the yarn, cotton runs beneath, and viscose appears here and there. Crumbs work down between the loops, so a working kitchen is the wrong room for it; and the wool holds lint, so it wants vacuuming weekly with the brush head off rather than on. Handwoven in India, one loop at a time, the way a sweater is knitted. Mostly wool, with cotton and a small amount of viscose. Also made at 130 × 190 cm and at 170 × 240 cm. White throughout; the stripe is texture rather than color. Thick and soft to stand on. Not for a busy kitchen — crumbs get into the loops. Vacuum weekly with the brush head removed; professional washing. What does a looped, hand-knitted rug feel like underfoot? Thick and yielding rather than firm.

The loops sit high and compress when you stand on them, so the surface behaves more like a folded blanket than like a shorn pile. It is a comfortable rug barefoot and a poor one under a rolling chair. Why is a looped rug not recommended for a kitchen? The gaps between raised loops are wide enough for crumbs and grit to fall into and awkward to draw back out with a vacuum.

02What it sits well with

In a kitchen that gets daily use the rug needs more cleaning than it repays, which is why the house steers people away from it there. People keep saying they want to fall asleep on it, which is not something anyone says about a rug they mean to put in a hallway.
