On the surface: Wool, Natural. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is beige, cream.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Ribs that run like knitted rows, three fifths of it polyester
Handwoven in India in ridged beige stripes that run the length of the rug like the rows of a knitted sweater — 130 × 190 cm (4'3" × 6'3"), 4,200 g/m², a 10 mm pile of 40% wool and 60% polyester.
One piece, in a beige that leans toward ivory rather than sand. The stripes are not printed lines but raised ribs, and they change with where you are standing: crossed at right angles they are a texture, looked at down their length they are a pattern. There is no border and no medallion, nothing for furniture to orient itself around, which makes it a floor covering rather than an object.
Against pale oak and a low sofa it does the Scandinavian job; on a dark stained board in a rustic room it warms the floor instead. Wool carries the warmth and the polyester carries the wear. The blend is stated plainly rather than dressed up as natural: three fifths of this yarn is synthetic.
At 4,200 g/m² it is heavy for its size — you will feel it when you move it — and the 10 mm pile springs back, so walking across it leaves no visible track. It was knotted by hand, row by row, by weavers in India.
Vacuum it as you would any wool pile; a full wash is a specialist's job. Handwoven in India, knot by knot. 40% wool and 60% polyester in the pile. 4,200 g/m² — dense and heavy in the hand for a rug this size. 10 mm pile, ribbed into wave-like stripes across the surface. Light beige, close to ivory, with no border and no central motif. 130 × 190 cm (4'3" × 6'3") — a bedside, an entryway or a conservatory floor. Springs back underfoot and does not hold a footprint. One piece only. The floor for a room that is already busy above knee height.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
