Authentic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is colorful, green.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Green out of two dye baths, ninety years of Dazkırı wool
Dazkırı is a district of Afyonkarahisar in western Anatolia, and it lends its name to the weaving of this piece: a hand-knotted wool rug, green, 98 × 115 cm (3'3" × 3'9"), dyed with kök boya and past ninety years old. Nearly square, and small enough to be handled by one person.
Anatolian drawing in the ethnic register. One of one. Green is the rarest of the plant-dyed grounds, and there is a technical reason for it. No single plant gives a fast green; the color has to be built in two dyeings — a yellow over an indigo blue, or the reverse — so any green field represents twice the work of a red or a blue one, and twice the opportunity for the two layers to age at different rates.
Ninety years on, a plant green usually reads as a soft olive with the blue showing through where the yellow has faded first. That drift is the color's biography and it cannot be faked. Wool alone, in the pile and beneath it.
At just over a square meter this is a piece for a doorway, a bedside, or a wall, and its near-square proportion makes it awkward in a corridor and comfortable almost anywhere else. A rug that has been on floors for nine decades has thin places and worn ends, which is the usual state of an antique and not a fault of this one — a buyer wanting an even surface is looking for something new.
It should be washed by someone used to old rugs. Hand-knotted in Dazkırı, Afyonkarahisar; wool only. Kök boya dyeing — green built from two dyeings rather than one plant. The green has drifted toward olive as the yellow layer aged faster than the blue. 98 × 115 cm (3'3" × 3'9"), close to square, about 1.1 square meters. Past ninety years, at the edge of the trade's antique band. Wear and thin places are normal in a rug of this age. Specialist washing only.
A single piece. Green rugs turn up rarely enough that most collections do not contain one, which is the only argument this piece really needs.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
