Yellow Overdyed Vintage Handwoven Wool Rug

It began as an old rug, handwoven in Anatolia years ago by hands nobody can now name. Later it was shorn close to the foundation and dyed a second time, in yellow. What is left is the original drawing showing faintly through one strong color, at 202 × 280 cm (6'8" × 9'2"), wool pile on a cotton foundation. Shearing changes what a rug is.

01Up close to the pattern

The knots stay and the depth goes, and a pattern once carried by contrast between colors is now carried by the small difference in how the shorn tips took the new dye — so the old motifs read as ghosts rather than as figures. Yellow at this strength is a decision about the whole room.

02The Wool on the surface

Facing north it warms everything it touches; facing south at four in the afternoon it is the brightest thing in the house. Wool over cotton, and old enough that its village is no longer recorded.

03How many centimeters, which room

Shorn flat, the surface is firm rather than soft underfoot, and the whole rug is light for its size — light enough to lift and shake out on your own, which almost nothing else at this scale allows.

04The rule of care

A hard surface like this sweeps and vacuums without argument. Washing goes to a specialist; it is not a rug to soak in a bathtub. An older Anatolian handwoven rug, shorn down and dyed again. 05Coming off the loom

The knots and the drawing survive the process; the pile height and the original palette do not. Each one starts from a different rug, so no two finish the same even in one color. Why is the pattern so faint? Because the pile was cut short before dyeing.

06The origin of the pattern

With the depth removed, the design no longer reads through contrasting colors but through the slight difference in how the shorn tips accepted the new dye, which leaves the motifs visible but low in contrast. Every one of these is a different rug underneath, which is why two of them never look alike even when the color matches.
