Multicolor Yahyalı Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Yahyalı sits in the mountains south of Kayseri, and the rug that carries its name is one of the most recognizable drawings in central Anatolia. This is a hand-knotted Yahyalı rug in wool, 108 × 194 cm (3'7" × 6'4"), woven in Türkiye, multicolored, with the district's stepped geometry running the length of the field. The drawing is geometric rather than floral — angular repeats and a stepped central form, with a border that runs a smaller version of the same logic around the edge.

01The tone of the ground

Color is recorded on this piece only as rengarenk, multicolored, which is the honest description: no single tone takes charge, and the ones doing most of the work are the reds and blues that Yahyalı weaving has always leaned on.

02The mark of slow weaving

In a hallway with one lamp they settle rather than argue. Hand-knotted in Türkiye, wool from the pile down to the last row of the foundation. The house files it among its rare pieces, and it is old rather than new. Nothing on it was drawn on paper first: the medallion sits a knot or two off center and the two ends of the border do not close identically, which is the ordinary evidence of a weaver working from memory.

03Reading the motif

Take it to a rug washer; nothing improvised at home will do the job. Hand-knotted in Türkiye, in the Yahyalı pattern of the Kayseri highlands. Wool throughout — pile and foundation both. Geometric field with a stepped central form and a repeating border. Multicolored, with red and blue doing most of the work. 108 × 194 cm (3'7" × 6'4") — an entrance, a bedside, or the floor beside a desk.
