Beige Vintage Handwoven Round Rug, Ferforje series — a circle 250 cm across (8'2"), made in India, its pile bamboo viscose and its foundation cotton and wool, the drawing a faded pastel blue on beige. Ferforje is the Turkish for wrought iron, and the scrollwork is taken from it.

01Where it is laid

There is one of it. A round rug has no direction, which is the reason to use one: it settles a seating group without telling the furniture where to face. Two and a half meters across is enough to hold a sofa, two chairs and a table inside the edge.

02From ground to pile

The scrolls are drawn as though they had already faded — soft-edged, low in contrast, the blue barely raised out of the beige — so at a distance the pattern reads as texture and only resolves into iron when you are standing on it. The pile is bamboo viscose, a cellulose yarn made for shine, laid over a foundation of cotton and wool and tied by hand at close spacing.

03After the color

Beige and pale blue is a quiet pair: with white, cream, light walnut or pastel upholstery the rug recedes, and next to a strong color it will lose. A viscose surface shows where people have walked, and the mark lifts if the pile is brushed the right way.

04What Wool does

It is washed professionally or not at all. Handwoven in India, bamboo viscose pile over a cotton-and-wool foundation. Faded wrought-iron scrollwork in pale blue on beige. A 250 cm circle (8'2"), wide enough to contain a full seating group. Tied at close spacing, which is what holds the soft-edged drawing together. Made for Halıcızade; the series takes its name from ironwork, not from a place. Walking marks show on viscose and brush out. Professional washing. Rooms with too many right angles in them are the ones this solves, and it does it simply by having none.
