Green Round Plain Loom-Woven Rug, Focus Series

Focus Series round rug in green, loom-woven in India from wool, cotton and viscose, 150 cm (4'11") or 200 cm (6'7") in diameter. The color is not flat: it darkens toward one edge and lightens toward the other, so the circle reads as a shaded disc rather than a solid one. A circle has no corners to square against the walls, which is why it usually goes where the furniture is already round — beneath a small dining table, in the middle of an entry, beside a bed.

The gradient does the rest of the work. Nothing is drawn on the surface at all; the interest lies in the way the green travels from a deep bottle tone through moss to something near sage, and in the faint moiré the viscose leaves where it crosses the wool. Weaving happens on traditional looms in India, which in this construction means the ground is set mechanically while the finish — the trimming, and the bound edge a circle needs all the way around — is hand work.

01How it feels underfoot

Wool gives the surface its body, cotton the structure, viscose the shine. The pile sits in the middle: not thin enough to slide a chair across easily, not deep enough to be called plush.
