Red Anatolian Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Heritage Series

01A question of size

Two sizes exist: 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"), then 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"). The panels are the structure of the design and the border is what binds them, worked in enough detail to frame the field rather than merely edge it.

02Color, by the light

Red runs beneath everything, with the motifs picked out in beige and earth tones, so the composition manages to be loud in color and orderly in arrangement at once. The viscose in the motifs carries a low sheen, which means the reds shift half a step as light moves across them and no two panels ever quite match. The looms stand in Kütahya, and the technique puts machine and hand together: the loom builds the body, the finishing is hand work.

03What the yarn is

Wool makes the pile, viscose the sheen in the drawing, and cotton the foundation that carries the strength. The series is made in small runs rather than continuously, so pieces differ slightly from one another in the way small runs always do.

04Color that shifts through the day
