Cream Vintage-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Heritage Series

A classical medallion drawing, faded almost to nothing in powder pink and dusty rose on a cream ground — that is the whole face of this rug. Heritage Series, loom-woven at Oushak in western Türkiye.

01A question of size

It comes in one size, 200 × 300 cm, near enough 6'7" × 9'10". New Zealand wool at the surface, viscose through the motifs, cotton beneath. The pattern is there and it is not there. Held at a distance the field looks like plain cream; walk onto it and a medallion, a border and the corner pieces rise out of the ground in tones a shade or two away from the cream itself.

That is the point of a vintage treatment — a classical rug without the weight a classical rug usually carries into a room. The powder pink does more than it appears to: against a white wall it keeps the cream from turning gray. Knotting begins on the machine at Oushak and everything after it is completed by hand, which is the Heritage construction across the series.

03How it feels underfoot

New Zealand fleece takes the ground, viscose is threaded through the drawing for the small amount of shine it wants, and cotton runs below as warp and weft. The pile is low: it lies flat, takes a vacuum quickly, and gives less underfoot than a deep rug does.

04From the hand of the weaver

The run is limited. Made at Oushak in western Türkiye, with the knots set by machine and the finish done by hand. New Zealand wool pile with viscose in the motifs, over a cotton warp and weft. Woven at 200 × 300 cm. The classical medallion is faded into powder pink and dusty rose on cream. A low pile, so no door will catch and dirt has less to sink into. Made in a limited run. Professional washing. In ten years the cream will have moved a little further toward ivory, and the pattern will be no fainter than it already is.
