On the surface: Wool, Cotton. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Tribal pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a colorful ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Yahyalı prayer format, plant-dyed wool, past eighty years
Under a square meter — 78 × 122 cm (2'7" × 4'0") — which is roughly the size a prayer rug has always been, being about the ground a kneeling adult takes up. Hand-knotted in Yahyalı, in Kayseri province, from plant-dyed wool over a cotton foundation, and past eighty years old.
This one was taken from a chest, not lifted off a floor. Yahyalı weavings are known by a small set of habits: strong reds and blues, a compact field, and a border that does a lot of work relative to the size of the piece.
At eighty-plus years this one falls in the semi-antique band, the fifty-to-hundred bracket the trade uses, and it has the coloring that goes with plant dyeing rather than a chemical bath — reds that vary along the length, blues that go slightly green where the light has reached them.
Village weaving of this generation was made for a household and not for a market, which is why the drawing is confident rather than careful. Wool sits on top; below it the warp and weft are cotton, a slightly firmer combination than the all-wool foundations of the older village pieces and holds the small format square. Because it was stored rather than used, the pile is fuller than eighty years would suggest, and the fringes have been protected from the wear that usually takes them first.
That storage leaves fold lines, and they need a week under furniture to lie down. Wash it professionally, and comb rather than brush the ends. Hand-knotted in Yahyalı, Kayseri; wool pile on a cotton foundation. Plant-dyed, with the color variation that follows from it. Prayer format at 78 × 122 cm (2'7" × 4'0"), under one square meter. Past eighty years, which puts it in the semi-antique band of fifty to a hundred. Chest-stored, so the pile and fringes are fuller than the age implies. Fold lines are present and take about a week to settle. Professional washing; comb the ends by hand.
One piece. Small rugs of this kind usually end up somewhere they can be looked at closely, which is what they were drawn for.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
