The surface uses Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Classic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is red.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Pomegranate by day, wine by lamplight, inside a cream border
Hand-dyed yarn is what makes this one: the red in a Mahal Series Oushak rug, 244 × 304 cm (8'0" × 10'0"), runs from pomegranate to deep wine within a single field, with cream and earth-toned motifs over it and a pale flowered border around them.
Wool surface, cotton foundation, handwoven in Pakistan. One piece. A red ground that came out of one dye lot would be flat at this scale. This one was dyed by hand, so the field carries several reds at once, and which of them you see depends on the hour — morning light finds the lighter, fruit-skin end, while a lamp at night pulls the whole floor toward wine.
The cream border is what keeps the red from becoming heavy: its light flowers give the eye somewhere to rest before it goes back into the dense center. The motif drawing is Oushak, close-packed, with very little empty ground left between forms. It was knotted in Pakistan by craftsmen still working the double-knot tradition that came from Anatolia, loop after loop.
All the visible surface is wool. Cotton holds the skeleton and keeps the rectangle true, and a small amount of synthetic yarn in the foundation adds to that. The body is solid without being thick, so the rug stays put and cleans easily.
A red rug of this weight will set the temperature of a room whether you want it to or not. Send it to a specialist for washing. Woven by hand in Pakistan, on the double knot Anatolia has always used. Hand-dyed reds, from pomegranate through to deep wine, in one field. Cream border with light flowers framing a densely drawn Oushak center. Wool surface throughout; cotton foundation with a little synthetic yarn for durability. 244 × 304 cm (8'0" × 10'0"), a size for a large reception room. Solid but not thick, and easy to keep clean day to day. A specialist should do the washing. A single rug, not a repeatable design. It will be the warmest thing in the room, and everything else will be chosen around it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
