On the surface: Viscose. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is colorful.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Bakır, krom ve gümüş tonlarında soyut bir yüzey
Three yarns share this rug. Wool builds the pile, viscose and bamboo viscose are worked into the pattern where the drawing needs to catch light, and cotton carries the warp underneath. It is handwoven in India, measures 172 × 248 cm (5'8" × 8'2"), and the abstract figure across it is drawn in gold-yellow, silver-gray, copper and chrome. Those four tones are metals, and they behave like metals on a floor. Gold-yellow holds steady under any light.
Silver and chrome flip between bright and dull according to which way the pile has been laid, and the copper is the warm anchor that keeps the whole thing from going cold. The pattern has no repeat you can trace and no border to close it, so the figure runs off all four edges as if the rug were cut from something larger. The weaving is done by hand on a cotton warp in India.
Wool takes the traffic and the two cellulosic yarns take the shine, which is a division of labor rather than a decoration — a rug made entirely of viscose would gleam everywhere and read as flat. Viscose is spun from wood pulp and is weaker wet than wool is, so this rug goes to a professional cleaner and never into water at home. Wool in the pile, with viscose and bamboo viscose put through the pattern for sheen. Handwoven in India, over a warp of cotton. 172 × 248 cm (5'8" × 8'2"). Gold-yellow, silver-gray, copper and chrome, in an abstract figure that runs off all four edges. The metallic tones change value as the pile turns; the wool areas do not. Professional washing only — the viscose content rules out home cleaning. Against a plain sofa it does the work a painting would do, and it is the one thing in the room that answers a change of light. This rug belongs to the Maison Series.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
