Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is yellow.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

Yellow rugs are hard to find and hand-knotted plain ones are close to unavailable, which is the reason this one exists: a plain yellow wool rug, hand-knotted, from the Pinhan series — 204 × 297 cm (6'8" × 9'9"), mustard and gold with no pattern at all, wool over a cotton foundation, tied in Afghanistan.
Only one at this size. With nothing drawn on it the whole interest sits in the color, and the color is not one flat tone. Mustard and gold run into each other across the field the way a dyed fleece does, so the surface has grain in it when you look down and reads as a single warm plane from a doorway. Yellow at this saturation is a decision.
In a pale, sparse room it becomes the only source of temperature; beside dark wood it turns nearly ochre. Craftsmen tie it with the double knot, by hand, over a cotton frame carrying a small share of synthetic yarn for strength.
Wool covers the pile corner to corner. Halıcızade drew the series itself and had this woven because a plain hand-knotted rug in a difficult color is not a thing a mill will make on speculation.
A rug this size holds a great deal of water, so if it needs washing it leaves the house. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan with the double knot, in the Pinhan series. No pattern of any kind — mustard and gold running together across the field. Wool throughout the pile; cotton foundation with a small amount of synthetic yarn. 204 × 297 cm (6'8" × 9'9"), enough to carry a full seating group. The color reads differently in a pale room than beside dark timber. A plain field shows spills and wear sooner than a patterned one does. Washing is a job for a workshop, given the size and the weight. Most people meet a plain yellow rug once, decide against it, and then think about it for a year.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
