Gray Vintage-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Retro Series

A handwoven wool rug from the Retro series, 210 × 303 cm (6'11" × 9'11"), gray with a blue cast in it, carrying Oushak motifs redrawn at a much lower contrast than the sixteenth-century originals.

01How it feels underfoot

Wool pile on a cotton warp, worked with a double knot in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Walk to one end of the room and the rug is bright; walk back and it has gone dark and matt. That reversal is the lie of the pile rather than anything in the dye.

02Which tone on the ground

The rug is finished with a wash and a dye process that pulls the tone down and leaves the drawing sitting just above the ground instead of standing off it, which is what gives an old rug its quietness. Gray here is not a neutral.

03Knot by knot, by hand

It leans toward blue in daylight and toward brown under a warm bulb, and it will pick up whatever else is strong in the room. The double knot is the reason the surface holds its shape, and the rows are packed tightly enough that the rug stays thin rather than deep.

04What the yarn is

Wool for the pile, cotton for the warp underneath. One consequence of the wash is worth stating plainly, since photographs never show it: the rug will not look the same from both ends, and if you need an even tone across a long room this is not the piece.
