Red Geometric-Pattern Loom-Woven Rug, Taftan Series

Kütahya has been weaving for long enough that its workshops now run looms where they once ran hand frames, and this red Taftan series rug comes off one of them — Tencel® and cotton, geometric drawing, three sizes, topping out at 240 × 340 cm (7'10" × 11'2").

01When you walk in

The largest is a room-filling piece and the smallest, 170 × 240 cm, sits under a sofa and coffee table. From standing height the field looks almost plain. The geometry only declares itself as you get closer, because the figures are worked at the same value as the ground and are separated from it by texture instead of by color.

02How it feels underfoot

Red at this saturation carries a lot of light, and the tone shifts step by step across the rug as the pile turns, which is what stops a strong color from going flat across a floor this size. Tencel® is the sheen and cotton is the backbone.

03From the hand of the weaver

The knotting technique is the one hand-weavers use, run on a loom, and it is where the surface depth comes from. Wool does not appear in this rug at all. Because both fibers are cellulosic they should not get wet at home, so cleaning is a professional job — and on a red rug that is worth arranging before a spill rather than after one. Loom work in Kütahya, Türkiye; the yarns are Tencel® and cotton. Three sizes: 170 × 240 cm, 200 × 300 cm, and 240 × 340 cm (7'10" × 11'2"). Geometric figures set at the same value as the ground, read by texture. No wool content. The red shifts value across the piece as the pile changes direction. Professional cleaning; keep water off it. It works as a background in a bohemian room and as the subject in a plain one, and it is the rare red that will do either.
