Beige Plain Loom-Woven Viscose Rug

This rug takes footmarks. Better to lead with that than bury it: a plain beige rug of 100% viscose, loom-woven in India, weighing 4,500 g/m² over a 12 mm pile — thick, dense and silk-like to the hand.

01First contact

Anyone who wants a floor that looks untouched at the end of the day should stop reading here. The marks are the same property that makes it worth owning. Viscose comes off the spinneret as regenerated cellulose and returns light the way filament silk does, so the pile reads bright where it lies away from you and dark where it lies toward you. Walk across it and you leave a lighter track behind. Brush the pile back and the track goes.

02Color, by the light

In full sun the beige is almost luminous; in shade it drops to a matt, deeper tone, which means the rug is a slightly different color at four o'clock than it was at eleven. Loom-woven in India: machine knotting sets the ground and hands finish it.

03Where it is laid

At 4,500 g/m² there is more weight here than the thickness suggests, and the 12 mm pile is deep enough that bare feet sink into it, which is why it turns up in bedrooms more often than living rooms.

04From ground to pile

Viscose weakens when wet. Send it to a professional cleaner and keep water off it in the meantime. The pile is viscose alone; the loom is in India. 4,500 g/m², with a 12 mm pile. Shows footmarks and vacuum tracks; brushing the pile clears them. Shifts from bright to matt with the angle of the light. Plain beige, with the depth in the tone rather than in a pattern.
