Red Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Çamardı Village Rug

Fifty years is what the house puts on this one, which places it in the middle of the trade's semi-antique band. It is a village rug from Çamardı, in the Taurus foothills of Niğde province: hand-knotted in wool, 102 × 192 cm (3'4" × 6'4"), red and burgundy, drawn in the flat angular manner of the Anatolian looms.

01The origin of the pattern

A single rug. Half a century of use is legible on it before any motif is. The pile lies in the direction it was walked; it carries the low shine that only wool and years produce together; the reds have opened where light reached them and held where furniture stood.

02Knot by knot, by hand

The drawing underneath is geometric throughout, worked in burgundy against red, with the two tones close enough that the figures appear and recede as you change position. Wool from end to end, knotted by hand in Türkiye. Çamardı is a small place high on the road up toward the Aladağlar, and its looms were domestic ones — a rug like this was made in a house, for that house, and the pattern lived in the weaver's head and never on squared paper.

03The mark of slow weaving

That is why the two ends of it do not match and why the borders wander a knot or two. On age: dealers call a hundred years and over antique, the fifty-to-hundred stretch semi-antique, and twenty to eighty vintage — and not one of those three labels is issued or checked by anybody.

04After the color

This rug has been washed before; when it needs it again, a rug specialist should do the work. Hand-knotted in the village of Çamardı, Niğde province, southern Türkiye. Wool pile and wool foundation. Red and burgundy geometric drawing, low in contrast and close in tone. Around fifty years old, which puts it in the semi-antique band. 102 × 192 cm (3'4" × 6'4") — a hallway, a small sitting area, beside a bed.
