On the surface: Natural, Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Konya çubuklu: barred end to end, 152 × 376 cm
Çubuklu means barred, and that is the entire design of this Konya kilim: bands of color crossing the width, one after another, for the whole three meters seventy-six of its length. Handwoven in wool, 152 × 376 cm (5'0" × 12'4"), multicolored, made in Türkiye, and out of a dowry chest. A banded kilim has nothing to hide behind, so all of its quality is in the color order: which band follows which, how wide each one is allowed to be, and where the run is broken.
Get that right and the piece works from every angle in the room; get it wrong and it reads as fabric sold by the meter. At this length the sequence has to hold for a long way, which is the harder version of the problem. Handwoven in wool in the Konya region, flat, with the weft driven home over the warp until the cloth is the pattern and nothing rises above it.
A piece nearly four meters long was woven for a room covered by more than one kilim — the way an Anatolian floor was dressed before a single large rug became the expectation. It is unused, and it will want a professional wash and a week or two of weight before it lies down properly. Handwoven in wool in the Konya region of central Türkiye. Çubuklu — barred: bands of color across the width, and no other motif. Flat-woven and weft-faced, with no pile and a reverse close to the front. 152 × 376 cm (5'0" × 12'4"): a long hall, or one of two or three pieces covering a large floor. Multicolored, with the whole effect resting on the order of the bands. Chest-stored, so the colors are where the weaver put them. Professional washing, then time under furniture to flatten. A single piece; nothing is woven to match it. Four meters of kilim is a commitment to a room's proportions, and rooms with those proportions are rarer than the kilims that fit them.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
