On the surface: Wool, Silk. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Traditional pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Cream inside a drawn frame, silk running in the wool
Cream Framed Handwoven Wool and Silk Rug, Pera Series: a cream field held inside a drawn frame, woven in Türkiye by hand, with silk running through the wool, 163 × 232 cm (5'4" × 7'7"). Pera is the old name for the Beyoğlu side of İstanbul, and the series takes it. A frame pattern gives a rug its edges back.
That matters more on a pale ground than a dark one: cream has a way of running into a pale floor until nothing marks where the rug stops, and a drawn border stops it. Inside the frame the field is left comparatively open, which gives the silk in the weave somewhere to show: a pale rug with silk in it changes value as light moves across it instead of staying one flat tone. Woven in Türkiye by hand, in wool and silk together.
The house tags this series artisan, and the operation behind that word is the ordinary one — the knots are tied by hand and the ends are finished by hand, one at a time. At 163 × 232 cm it is a four-seat living-room size, a sofa and a pair of chairs with their legs on it, or the whole of a bedroom floor from door to far wall.
Cream and silk together mean this is not the rug for an entrance hall. Professional washing. Handwoven in Türkiye; wool pile with silk worked into it. Cream field inside a drawn frame border. 163 × 232 cm (5'4" × 7'7") — a sofa and two chairs, or the floor of a bedroom. Silk changes value across the field as the light moves. The border is what stops a pale rug from vanishing into a pale floor. Not an entrance rug; cream and silk both record traffic. Professional washing. A single piece in this size. The pattern is the kind that stops being noticed after a month and would be missed immediately if it went.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
