On the surface: Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Tribal pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is colorful in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Sixty-one centimeters wide, a Mut cicim, wool throughout
The wool in this one went into a piece barely two-thirds of a square meter: a handwoven Mut cicim kilim, 61 × 110 cm (2'0" × 3'7"), multicolored, made in Türkiye. Run a hand across it and the motifs are findable with your eyes shut — that is what cicim is, and why the technique has a name of its own. Mut sits inland from Mersin, in country where weaving was a household activity rather than a trade, and pieces this size came out of it constantly: covers for a chest, faces for a cushion, mats for a doorway.
The multicolored drawing is the one that would appear on a full floor kilim, reduced to whatever fits in 61 centimeters of width, which usually means two or three columns of motif and no border at all. Handwoven in wool, with the cicim threads carried over the ground weave as the piece was made. On a small kilim the finishing at the two ends is more than a detail — it is what holds the weaving shut, and once it loosens a small piece begins to undo itself from the end inward.
Handle it by the body, not the ends. Clean it professionally, and rarely. Handwoven in wool in Mut, inland from Mersin. Cicim technique — motifs raised above a plain flat ground. Multicolored, with the drawing reduced to what 61 cm of width allows. 61 × 110 cm (2'0" × 3'7") — a doorway, a chest top, or a cushion face. No border; the composition is columns of motif rather than a framed field. The end finishing holds a small weaving together — carry it by the body. Cleaned professionally, and not often. Single piece. Small weavings are the ones that survive, because nobody ever put a table on them.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
