Multicolor Ethnic-Pattern Handwoven Wool Kilim Floor Cushion

Neither a rug nor a pillow: a 50 × 50 cm (1'8" × 1'8") square of handwoven kilim, wool on a cotton foundation, made in Afghanistan and meant for a floor, a bench or a chair. The drawing is ethnic in the strict sense — traditional motifs from Anatolia and Central Asia, worked in strong color. Kilim is a flatweave: the weft is packed down hard over the warp and there is no pile at all, which is why the surface is thin and firm and why the pattern is geometric rather than curved — a flatweave draws in steps.

01From the hand of the weaver

The colors here are set against each other at full strength, in the way village weaving does it, without the softening a workshop piece would apply. Small objects can carry that intensity where a large one could not. Every visible thread is wool.

02The Cotton on the surface

The cotton is underneath, in the foundation, doing the structural work. It was woven by hand in villages that have been weaving for generations, and the surface is fine and soft for a flatweave, which is not a given.

03Where it is laid

Pieces like this have become common in interiors over the last few years, and the reason is that one of them changes a room for very little. Have it cleaned professionally. Handwoven kilim from Afghanistan, made entirely by hand. Wool makes the face.

04The mark of slow weaving

Cotton does the rest. Traditional Anatolian and Central Asian motifs, in undiluted color. Flat-woven: no pile, a thin firm surface, geometric drawing. 50 × 50 cm (1'8" × 1'8") — for a floor, a bench, or a hard chair. Fine and soft to the hand for a flatweave. Cleaned professionally, not at home. One, and there is no second. It is the smallest piece of real handwork a room can hold, and it does not pretend to be more than that.
