Authentic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is colorful in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Hall-length Anatolian kilim in wool, patterned on both faces
An Anatolian kilim runner handwoven in wool in Türkiye, 88 × 336 cm (2'11" × 11'0"), which is a corridor length rather than a room size, and multicolored across the whole of it. A kilim has no pile: the weave is the pattern, and both faces of it work. Three and a third meters is long enough that the drawing has to repeat, and Anatolian kilim drawing is built for exactly that — a unit of motif, then the same unit again, with the color changing between repeats so the eye keeps finding new work to do.
Laid down a hallway it does what a runner is for: it gives the walk a rhythm and stops a long narrow space from reading only as a passage. At 88 cm wide it leaves floor showing on both sides in most halls, which is how a runner should sit. It was woven by hand on a Turkish loom, and a piece this long tests a weaver more than a wide one does — the tension has to hold for three meters and the beat has to stay even, or the width wanders.
Look along the edge and you can see whether it did. Kilims are thin and finished on both sides, so this one can be turned end for end when the door end begins to look worn. Professional washing when the time comes, which for a hall runner arrives sooner than it does for a sitting-room rug. Handwoven wool kilim, made in Türkiye, flat and pileless. 88 × 336 cm (2'11" × 11'0") — a hall, a landing, or a long kitchen. Multicolored, with the Anatolian motif unit repeating along the length. Reversible, and light enough to lift and turn end for end. Thin, so it passes under a door without anything being planed. Professional washing. The only piece at this length. Hall runners wear at one end first, and this one can simply be turned round and given a second life as long as the first.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
