The story of this rug

Something close to a runner without quite being one: a handwoven wool kilim from Mut, in Mersin province, 97 × 212 cm (3'2" × 6'11"), multicolored and pileless. Just under a meter wide is the width at which a flatweave stops belonging in a hall and starts working in front of a sofa. One of one. Mut sits inland from the Mediterranean, under the Taurus range, and weaving there has stayed a household activity.

01Which tone on the ground

What that means for the object is visible on it: the color changes were decided as the work went up rather than planned beforehand, so bands widen and narrow, a stripe stops for no reason and starts again, and the two ends do not mirror each other.

02Knot by knot, by hand

A workshop would have corrected all of that. A village loom keeps it, and it is the record of a day's work. Wool warp, wool weft, beaten down until the warps disappear beneath them — that is what makes a kilim weft-faced, and it is why both sides of this piece are finished and either can be the one on show.

03The tone of the ground

A vertical join between two colors is left open as a slit, which is deliberate and structural, and it is visible held against a window. Two meters of flatweave weighs very little, so it travels on a smooth floor and wants something underneath. Handwoven in wool at Mut, Mersin province, southern Türkiye. 97 × 212 cm (3'2" × 6'11") — narrow, but wider than a hall runner. Weft-faced flatweave: no pile, and both sides finished. Bands widen and narrow because the drawing was decided at the loom. Vertical color joins are left as open slits, which is structural. Light enough to slide, so grip underneath is worth having. Kilim-specialist cleaning. One piece. A kilim that does not repeat itself end to end is one where nobody was working from a drawing, and that is worth more than symmetry.

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
